U. S. Navy Lieutenant Commander M. Scott Carpenter was born May 1, 1925 in boulder, Colorado. Carpenter was the pilot of the Mercury Atlas 7 orbital flight on May 24, 1962. Launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, he completed a successful three orbit space flight mission, reaching a maximum altitude (apogee( of 164 miles, and attaining an orbital velocity of 17,532 miles per hour. Carpenter's Aurora 7 Mercury spacecraft landed in an area in the Atlantic approximately 1,000 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral.
