Description:
The interesting prehistoric cliff ruins in the Canyon of El Rito de los Frijoles are included in the Bandelier National Monument. The latter is on the Pajarito Plateau west of the Rio Grande River and northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The only approach to the ruins by motor is through a country of exceptional scenic and human interest. Quaint Spanish-American settlements and the inhabited Indian pueblo of San Ildefonso are passed before the beautiful Pajarito canyon country is entered.

The Navaho silversmiths learned their art centuries ago from Mexico and there has been comparatively little change in either method or tools, the art being maintained in pure form by them.
Title:
Pueblo Women Baking Bread
New Mexico (NM), Divided Back unused

Description:
These curious, conical-shaped, outdoor ovens used in the Southwest by the Indians and many of the Mexicans were probably borrowed from the Spaniards. They are built of brush, plastered over inside and out with thick coatings of adobe mud, and last, with constant repairs made on them, almost indefinitely. They are built outdoors for several reasons, the main one being to do away with the heat resulting during the warm weather. The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico are a very conservative people. They are absolutely self-supporting, and are citizens of the United States.

The Castaneda, At Las Vegas, is a long low building, faced with brick, roofed with red tiles and patterned after the old California Missions. It is named for Pedro de Castaneda, a Spanish soldier who was the principal historian of Coronado's expedition into the Southwest in 1540. Las Vegas is the second city in New Mexico in size; is a railroad division point; and in addition to being one of the most important wool shipping points, does a large general business.
Description:
Here the old meets the new, and Indian, Spanish, and Anglo-American cultures merge in one of America's most picturesque and historic regions. Santa Fe, for example, has the nation's oldest capitol (the Palace of Governors, built in 1609) and the newest capitol. Yet Santa Fe was not the first capital. Ruins of an older one are across from San Juan Pueblo near Espanola. This view shows the new round capitol building - built in the shape of "ZIA" - the Indian Sun Symbol.
