Description:
To the Hopi and Zuni Indians of northern Arizona and New Mexico, kachinas are supernatural beings that help them in their everyday lives. According to ritual, tribesmen impersonate both male and female kachinas and perform dances to call forth assistance from these supernatural forces. The Crow Mother is considered by some Hopis to be hoots disapproval if they are noisy or misbehave. The fierce Black Ogre demands food from the children and threatens to eat them if not satisfied. These 6" hand painted figurines are collected by visitors as token mementos of the many elaborately carved kachinas.
