Title:
The French Revolution
Washington (DC), Continental Chrome PM 1989 Jul-14

Description:
No.89-20. The French Revolution was started by the French aristocracy, which wanted to bend the monarchy to its own will. However, the nobility sought only to improve its own position. It had little concern for the welfare of the common people. Soon, a movement made up of commoners rose against the entire privileged class. This movement held forth hope for a democratic administration that would be free of the political bigotry and corruption that poisoned the old regime. These people stormed the Bastille, a Parisian prison, on July 14, 1789. A hated symbol of the oppression of the French people, the Bastille was conquered, and the following day, the people began to demolish the prison. To this day, the fall of the Bastille is commemorated in France with the same patriotism Americans impart on Independence Day celebrations in the United States. Fittingly, the stamp featured on this Maximum Card was issued on Bastille Dy in Washington, D.C., in honor of the 200th anniversary of the fall of the Bastille

Title:
Future Mail Transportation
Washington (DC), Continental Chrome PM 1989 Nov-27

Description:
No.89-40. Imagine that someday human space colonies dot universe the way cities dot the earth today. Space travel would become so routine that an interstellar highway system would become necessary to handle the traffic--people would have to be transported from space station to space station, from planet to planet. But that would not be the only kind of traffic generated by space colonies. "Interstellar trucklines" would evolve to carry into space things that colonies would consider necessities, like food, medicine, clothing, and, of course, letters from home. Some people feel that it is quite likely that the day will come when space-age vehicles travel along interstellar highways delivering mail to colonists as close as the moon and as far away as the outer reaches of the universe. This impressive transportation system would carry people, goods and raw materials as well as mail on routes to extraterrestrial destinations, including post offices among the stars

Title:
Costa's Hummingbird
Washington (DC), Continental Chrome PM 1992 Jun-15

Description:
No.92-48. The bright green and violet plumage of the Costa's Hummingbird is the perfect compliment to a harshly beautiful landscape of red sandstone and purple sage. Found from California east to New Mexico, the Costa's Hummingbird is known for its fondness of high, dry plateaus. In the winter, the bird migrates a comparatively short distance to Arizona and southern California and into Mexico. But in the summer, the Costa's frequents the canyons and mountains of the American Southwest, as well as California's golden hills. The male is very distinctively marked, for no other hummingbird on the continent has a purple cap and throat, plus feathers that stick out like whiskers. As mating season rolls around, the male Costa's performs stunning aerial acrobatics in an attempt to woo a female. Once he as succeeded, the female will lay two tiny eggs in a nest scarcely over an inch in outside diameter. The eggs weigh as much as 20 percent of the mother's body weight, the equivalent of a 135-pound woman giving birth to a 27-pound baby
Description:
No.92-115. Variscite is a phosphate mineral that occurs in glassy nodules, veins, or crusts in near-surface deposits. Formed by the action of phosphate waters on aluminous rocks, this mineral occurs in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Zaire, Australia and Utah. It is also found on islands where phosphatic solutions from guano--seafowl excrement--have interacted with aluminous igneous rocks. Most gem quality variscite occurs in an extensive deposit in Fairfield, Utah. Commonly known at this location as Utahlite, it is found in nodular masses as much as a foot in diameter. Pale green in color, this semiprecious gemstone is used extensively as an ornamental material in brooches, earrings, and beads. Variscite is often substituted for turquoise, which it closely resembles, but is more porous and tends to absorb body oils which discolor it. Cut into sections, variscite frequently exhibits color variation near the center because of greater density, and may display "eyes" of other phosphate minerals as well
Description:
No. 88-37. Just before the turn of the century, Americans were finding more and more uses for oil. Until better means of delivery were devised, oil companies used traditional horse-drawn delivery wagons modified with a few minor adjustments. As oil trains pulled into the local railroad station, the wagons lined up to be filled. Their tanks were secured by metal strapping, with movement prevented by a crossbar at the rear of the driver's cab at the front. Most wagons had either lever or pedal brakes. Rattling along the country roads and city streets, they became a common sight. The typical oil wagon sported a length of metal protected by a rubber, canvas, or leather hose for bulk discharge, and a semi-rotary hand pump for "non-gravity" discharge. At the unloading point, the dealer would dispense lamp oil to customers who were shopping for many household items. Sometimes the oil was even stored alongside food. Fortunately, with the automobile, came greater safety and efficiency in the handling of oil
Description:
No.88-58. In the July of 1820, Captain Nathaniel Palmer was just twenty years old, but he had dreams of experiencing the world far beyond the boundaries of his home of Stonington, Connecticut. That summer, as captain of a tiny sloop called Hero, Palmer set sail for South Atlantic sealing grounds. Months later, the sloop anchored at the South Shetland Islands off the tip of South America. Climbing a hill, the curious young captain gazed across the broad horizon. The air was clear, and Palmer sighted mountains in the distance, perhaps fifty miles away. On November 18, 1820, Palmer maneuvered his boat as close to this uncharted coast as he dared, though ice prevented any landing. After following the mysterious coast for several days, Palmer sailed away, unable to do anything more. The land he spied came to be known as Palmer Peninsula, but Palmer had no idea of the vast, cruel continent of Antarctica to which the peninsula led. And it would be yet another century before explorers would unlock Antarctica's secrets
Description:
No.88-56. Commander Richard Evelyn Byrd made his first trip to Antarctica in 1928. A commander in the U.S. Navy, Byrd would become the most famous of all the Antarctic explorers. Braving the hardships of the frozen tundra, Byrd and his men landed and set up base on the Ross Barrier at the Bay of Whales. They named it Little America. The base included a photography lab, an observatory, a machine shop and a library. By radio, the crew kept in touch with the rest of the world during the fourteen months they were there. From Little America, Byrd and three others took off in a tri-motored airplane--the Floyd Bennett--on an historic flight which carried them over the South Pole. On that flight of November, 1929, Admiral Byrd carried the American flag some one thousand miles farther south than it had ever been before. On other trips, Byrd continued the study of this fascinating land, commanding the photographic and scientific study of some 450,000 square miles of Antarctica, much of it never before seen by man
