Father Jacques Pere Marquette - one of the first explorers to enter the Lake Michigan area, taken ill at what is now Chicago, his party tried to take him to his home mission at St. Ignace. Despite their efforts Father Marquette died here in the year 1675, later was moved to St. Ignace.
