  Title:
U. S. S. Hartford And Admiral Farragut
Divided Back PM 1909

Description:
U.S.S. "Hartford" and Admiral Farragut. The ship is an old steam sloop of war built at Boston, Mass., 1858; length 226 feet; breadth 44 feet; draught 18 feet 2 inches; displacement 2,800 tons; speed 12 knots; 24 guns; 14 officers and 164 men. Now training school of midshipmen at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. The "Hartford" was the flagship of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, the most famous naval hero of modern times. The greatest event in Farragut's life, and one of the greatest naval battles in history was that of Mobile Bay, August 5th, 1864. Farragut's oversight of the engagement, while lashed to the mast of the "Hartford," has become one of the most familiar episodes and pictures of the Civil War. The office of Vice Admiral was especially created for him in 1864, and that of Admiral in 1866. (Other old ships, see cards 71 to 74.
