This great dam at Elephant Butte is 1674 feet in length and 318 feet in height from bed rock. The flood waters impounded behind this mass of concrete back up forming a lack 40 miles in length. Known as the Rio Grande Project, and built by the government under supervision of the reclamation Service, at a cost of over $12,000,000 and reclaiming 200,000 acres of fertile land.
