A County Older than the State . Named for Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Nathaniel Greene, who drove the British from the Southeast. Area explored by De Soto in 1540, claimed as French Louisiana in 1699. Ceded to England 1763. Ceded by Choctaw Nation in 1816. Made a territorial county in 1819. County seat, Eutaw, named for Greene's victory at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina.
