This souvenir post card of the first aerial ascension by man comes to you from the 65th annual exhibition of the Rubber City Stamp Club, Akron, Ohio. Taken from a print in the Paul Tissandier Collection in Paris, and tinted for added effect. The success two months earlier of a balloon ascension with animals aboard led to approval by King Louis XVI for two men to attempt a similar flight. This time the Montgolifiere brothers built a larger balloon to carry the two volunteers, Pilatre de Rosier and the Marquis d'Arlandes. Departing from the garden of the king's Chateau Lamuette on November 21, 1783 the balloon was estimated to have risen to about 3,000 feet. The flight lasted twenty-five minutes, terminating in a field about 5 miles distant. Man had achieved his dream! This card is No. II in a series on the early development of lighter-than-air craft.
