Description:
Once a Spanish stronghold, it was late the seat of and the most important town in El Paso County. A few squat adobes and the Capilla de San Elizario, The graceful simple chapel of the ancient Spanish fortress, are grouped about the old plaza. Established following the Pueblo revolt in New Mexico (1860) by Indian refugees and Spanish soldiers, it was a presidio town with a chapel, rather than a mission settlement.
