bROM THIS ANCIENT CRADLE
The medallion between the Ameri-
can and Russian soldiers is the offi-
ciul insignia of the Persian Gulf Ser-
vice Command, the U.S. Army sup-
ply line to Russia. It consists of a
seven-põinted white star and a red
sword on a green background. The
star is from the flag of Iraq (Meso-
potamia); the sivord from the govern-
ment flag of Iran (Persia). Red
stands for sacrifice, white for purity,
and green for agriculture. The last
color also signifies Islam, the state
religion of these countries. All three
colors are common to the flags of
both countries
