Wilmington was settled by the Swedish in
1638 on the banks of the Christiana River and
named Christianaham, this was taken by the
Dutch in 1655, with the English taking control
in 1664. The city of Wilmington was laid out
in 1731. It is now the largest city in Delaware
and is important for its large domestic and
foreign trade and its many large industries.
