The Macleod
PM 1909

Description:
This clan is divided into two important branches - the Macleods of Harris, the descendanis of Tormond (oe Norman), and the Macleods of Lewis, the descendants of Torquil, both sons of Olave, the last Norwegian King ofMan and the Isles, whose kingdom was broken up in the 13th century. There are also a number of important cadet families of this name. The present chief of the clan is the 23rd in direct succession, his seat being Dunvegan Castle, on the west coast of Skye, The clam suffered very heavily at the Bettle of Worcester in 1651, fighting for Charles II. They also took a large share in the wars in America and India at the end of the 18th century. Their motto is "Hold Fast" and their badge "Juniper." The tartan here shown is commonly called the Dress tartan.
