Memorial dedicated by Calvin Coolidge 1927. Dedication of Washington by J.S. Cullinan 1930, Jefferson by F.D. Roosevelt 1936, Lincoln by Sen. Burke 1937, Roosevelt by Gov. Bushfield 1939. Sculptor died 1941, Son Carries work to completion.The world's largest sculptured historical monument, Mount Reshmore National Memorial has been carved in the granite excarpment of majestic Mount Rushmore, one of the highest points between the Atlantic and the Rockies. It is located in Custer State Park, near Keystone, South Dakota. Colossal sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, scaled to the size of men 465 feet high, with head 60 feet high from crown to chin, comprise this gigantic and inspiring monument to America's ideals of liberty and human happiness. Gutzon Borglum, original designer and sculptor, died in March, 1941, and the work was completed by his son Lincoln.
