Situated on "President's Hill," Hollywood Cemetery. Through the Open mullions of this mortuary monument may be seen the marble sarcophagus covering the remains of James Monroe, twice Governor of Virginia, 5th president of the U. S. (1817 - 1824) and author of the "Monroe Doctrine." Died in New York City in 1831 and was there buried. In 1858, however. his remains were distinterred and removed to their present resting place. Near by is the grave of President John Tyler.
