Seventeen acres of land were purchased by the
eighteen states of the north soon after the battle
of Gettysburg and presented to the National Govern-
ment on condition that it be forever preserved and
maintained as a national cemetery. More than 3600
Union Soldiers, including 1600 unknown, are buried
The cemetery
was dedicated by President
Lincoln, November 19th, 1863, at which time he
delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address".
