Description:
Lophortyx californica. This elegant quail is far more striking in appearance than the better known "Bobwhite". California quail are among the loveliest and liveliest of our upland game birds, and elusive fellows to find. Living in the humid Pacific coast region, they love the seclusion of the chapparal covered slopes. Here they gather in flocks - usually with one bird staying apart to act as a lookout. Let something disturb the lookout and a low, shrill sound sends the whole flock scurrying away in every direction. Though they can fly easily and well they prefer to seek safety by darting over the ground under the protection of thick brush or chaparral.
