Description:
Not only was San Francisco Bay the site of the first American lighthouse on the Pacific Coast (Alcatraz, 1854), but it was also the local of the first fog signal at Point Bonita light station, opened in 1855. An Old Army cannon, salvaged from the Benicia Arsenal, was fired every half hour during foggy weather. The isolated station of yesteryear can be reached today via the Fort Barry Road and by a log walk from the parking area through the only tunnel and over the only suspension bridge in the lighthouse system.
