The Custom House, erected 1818-19, at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Also showing at right the Hawkes House, 1801, and Derby House, 1761-62. As an introduction to the Scarlet Letter, published 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne describes the Custom House where he worked as Surveyor of the Port, 1846-49, including "an enormous specimen of the American eagle" over the front entrance.
