On 29 April 1679, the general court confirmed the establishment of St. Peter's Parish where the widow Martha Dandridge Custis, its most famous parishioner, married Col. George Washington on 6 January 1759. Completed n 1703, the restored parish church is today the oldest in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.
