Sutter's Fort
Additional Details:
Sutter's Fort, Sacramento, California, was founded in 1839 by Captain John A. Sutter as a protection against the Indians. It became the western terminus of overland wagon trains and one of the richest and largest trading posts in the West. After discovery of gold it became the seething center of the great gold rush--more than 42,000 miners passing through its gates in 1850. The reconstructed Fort with 22 rooms of exhibits is open to the public 10 to 4 daily. |
